a month around the basque after a couple of years of taking a little step back from it all. resting became the new training for me which has felt uncomfortable, but sensing that it will have a welcoming outcome. patience pays off they say. 🩰

i tried to compress this trip to 20 shots, got myself 837686 kcal richer but I’m glad my mind had the illusion that cycling the basque was an option. 🤠 jokes aside, stoked to slowly feel the flow back. it’s been some weird couple of years. thanks friends & eskerrik asko baskje, à toetje ♥️ luv

i recently read a sentence i’d like to share with you: “when we invest in the natural world, it doesn’t give back to us in monetary ways but offers returns that are far more valuable & regenerative to the mind and body than money could ever be.”

this sentence made me think of this trip to iceland. it reminds me of its pure, unpolished, raw landscapes. without noticing back then, it helped me in creating awareness that nature can help ‘calibrate’ my mind and body.

I hope this short video gives you a little impression from the session. During this, we had the possibility to test different settings to eventually provide the best for the event on the 6th of July. I can’t wait to see how it will turn out, exciting developments for us surfing dutchies I’d say! ☺️👀

Yesterday marks the day in where I trashformed into one of ‘em real ✨Tra$hGyaLs✨ (lol) - witness the OG 1.8K Balenciaga trashbag H.Q., seeing those happy garbage bins of steel. i have to admit that - besides the smell - i enjoyed it more than thought. 🥹
 On a more serious note 🤠 part of my current freelance work is discussing environmental issues like plastic pollution with children. Their honest - unfiltered - opinions brings up a lot of questions such as: What is the effect of separating waste at home? How come the rules for separating waste differ per municipality? Couldn’t we make it easier by making those rules the same, national-wide? What route does my waste make? Is it the consumer, producer or government who needs to take responsibility for pollution? What is the employees opinion about ‘biodegradable plastic’ and how is it getting processed? - a lot of questions from the little legends that I enthusiastically took with me.  This facility strives to reduce the amount of residual waste (= all waste together, unseparated) in 2030 as much as possible, since that’s one of their biggest issues. Help in spreading awareness and knowledge about separating waste is appreciated, because the cleaner the ‘raw material flow’, the higher quality of reuse is possible.’

Visiting this facility felt like the Chanels of the Waste Managements in the Netherlands - not that I ever visited them but you know what I mean 🤓 - It’s inspiring to witness how someone’s trash can become someone else’s treasure with good technology and knowledge. It remains a difficult topic to discuss combined with complex systems and models.

Thanks @gemeentekatwijk and @meerlanden for the hospitality. Stoked to process this knowledge in our new education programme for our youngsters and perhaps visit more of those in the future. 🚮

cleanup iceland - september 16th ‘22 // a post dedicated to @oceanmissionsiceland

There where the sun gets covered by the clouds in a split second, where the darkness light you up with the prettiest northern lights shows. From volcanoes to (historic) glacier ice, and elves to giants. Here where nature dominates, and where it left me impressed in every different scene we drove through - call it the land of opposites. Breathtaking. 🌱 
It made me enthusiastic to dive deeper into the Icelandic waters, its pollution and waste management. This post is dedicated to @oceansmissionsiceland and their inspiring work I got introduced to.

Located in the north; Husavik: a small village that is known for its whale watching tours and, since one year, also part of one of the Icelandic ‘Hope Spots’: ecologically unique areas of the ocean designated for protection because of their critical biological importance / biodiversity values.

Beach cleanups are one of the many expeditions contributing to Ocean Missions’ goals in Iceland. We visited the beach where the Laxá river - that flows from Lake Myvatn - meets the ocean. I was surprised how much we found in 3 hours considering how remote it is. Most of what we found was plastic that could be attributed to the fishing industry. We took it back to the facility in Husavik so it can be used for research, proper disposal or recycling.

During the clean-up I talked with Carlota, one of the enthusiast from An Oceans Mission. ‘It’s not only its pristine beautiful landscape like fairytales. The beaches are full of trash of which the government is not taking full responsibility for. Not only in how to manage the problem, but to stop being part of the problem creating single used plastics.’

About a week ago @hartbeachsurf asked me to host a talk about Surfing and its challenges during the Roxy Girls Surfing Day. To me, a subject that asks for fragility, self-reflection, and courage to talk about, with an incredibly valuable outcome for anyone that finds recognition. Because of this outcome, I decided to write most of them down, for anyone out here that might finds it useful as well - hope y'all can read it 🤓
